The Ministry of Interior received applications for 309 Nigerians to renounce their citizenship, according to information released by the Federal Government.

150 people submitted applications to abandon their Nigerian citizenship between 2006 and 2021, while 159 more renunciations were noted in 2022.

Dr. Shuaib Belgore, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Interior, and his Minister, Rauf Aregbesola, at the 64th State House briefings, which were organized by the Presidential Media Team and were held in Abuja, made the statement on Thursday.

The Advisory Committee on Nigerian Citizenship has scheduled a meeting for the 7th of February to evaluate another 350 overseas candidates seeking Nigerian citizenship, he said, outside the media briefing.

Dr. Belgore stated: “After the meeting, these applications for naturalization, when successful, will be sent to Mr. President-in-Council for approval. Now, down to those Nigerians who renounce their citizenship, so far we have registered 309″.

“Between 2006 and 2021, 150 Nigerians renounced their citizens. In 2022 alone 159 Nigerians renounced their citizenship,” he said.
