How Abia Ladies In Libyan Slave Camp Regain Freedom Through Hon. Azubuike’s Intervention

Two young women from Abia State, Miss Ihechi Uchenna and Miss Evelyn Gabriel, have regained their freedom after two harrowing years of torture, abuse, and servitude in Libya, thanks to the timely intervention of Hon. Peter Azubuike, a business mogul and chieftain of the Labour Party.

Ihechi and Evelyn reportedly travelled to Libya in 2023 after being deceived by their sponsors with promises of greener pastures. However, upon arrival, they were forced into slavery as domestic servants and subjected to inhumane treatment in what they described as a “slave camp.”

Videos of their ordeal, where they cried out for rescue, went viral online, drawing sympathy from Nigerians. Despite their pleas to return home, they were held captive by their sponsors, who demanded full repayment of the money allegedly spent on their journey before granting them freedom.

Sources revealed that the young women made several failed escape attempts, each time facing harsher punishment. Their captors reportedly warned that any further attempt to flee could lead to their death.

Moved by compassion, Hon. Peter Azubuike, who also serves as the facilitator of the Obingwa Youth Empowerment Summit, mobilized resources to secure their release. Working in collaboration with the Abia State Union in Libya, led by Comrade Ifeanyi Nworu, and a special Travel and Intervention Committee chaired by Evangelist Emma Josiah, Azubuike paid off the debts allegedly owed to the traffickers running into millions of naira.

He also financed their repatriation back to Nigeria and, during a meeting of the Obingwa Youth Empowerment Summit held on August 11, donated ₦500,000 each to Ihechi and Evelyn to help them start small-scale businesses.

Azubuike, who said he lost sleep after seeing the viral video of their suffering, stated that he could not bear to watch young women from his native Obingwa Local Government Area live as slaves in a foreign land.

“It was painful watching our daughters being subjected to such cruel conditions. I couldn’t rest until I found a way to bring them home. We must intensify awareness to stop others from falling into similar traps,” he said.

He warned against deceptive migration schemes that promise lucrative opportunities abroad but end up trapping victims in human trafficking rings.

“Many people, especially young girls, are lured abroad with false promises. When they arrive, they become slaves. Some never make it back alive. Our people must learn from this and stay vigilant,” he cautioned.

Upon regaining freedom, Ihechi and Evelyn recounted their traumatic experiences and expressed deep gratitude to Hon. Azubuike and members of the Obingwa Youth Empowerment Summit for their life-saving intervention.

They described how they were deceived with promises of good jobs and financial comfort, only to end up in detention camps where they suffered daily abuse and hopelessness.

Members of the Obingwa Youth Empowerment Summit commended Hon. Azubuike for his humanitarian gesture, describing him as a man with a compassionate heart.

One of the members, Mr. Victor Njoku, praised him for his consistent support to the needy and prayed for God’s blessings upon his life.

The youths also urged him to contest for the Obingwa/Osisioma Ngwa/Ugwunagbo Federal Constituency seat in the 2027 general elections, citing his commitment to community development and youth empowerment.
