The member representing Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency of Abia State, Hon. Uko Nkole has called on the people of Ohafia to ignore a WhatsApp Broadcast making rounds alleging that the Nigerian Military is planning a night raid in Ohafia in a bid to kill many youths in Ohafia at night.
He described the social media broadcast as fake news and an orchestrated attempt to engage in scaremongering and sow seeds of discord between the Military and the people of Ohafia.
In a release he personally signed on Monday, the federal lawmaker said he works closely with the Commandant of the 14 Brigade of the Nigerian Army stationed at Ohafia and that he has assured him that there is no basis for such an allegation as his men are solely concerned with maintaining peace in their area of jurisdiction including Ohafia where their barracks is located.
“I understand that due to the unfortunate incidence of yesterday (Friday) which led to the painful demise of a youth, Friday Ota, and the attendant chaos it precipitated, there has been ill-will among the people of the area against security agencies but I urge citizens to go about their lawful endeavours without fear of harassment.
“The Nigerian Police Force, following calls from all quarters, including mine, have since apprehended their personnel who took part in the unfortunate events of yesterday and they are working hard to restore calm to the area.
“Residents of Ohafia and indeed, the Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency are assured that security agencies in the area are approaching their mandates with renewed sense of professionalism and discipline and God-willing, the sad episode of yesterday will not repeat itself again.
“I thank the Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu for his prompt intervention in the crisis of yesterday which helped to calm the situation and urge all residents of the area to ignore the fake rumour of a planned raid and go about their lawful endeavours.
“Please, kindly give the contents of this press statement widest circulation.
“May God guides us to overcome these temporary challenges,” he said.
