A sponsored by Hon Amobi Ogah the member representing Isuikwuato/Umunneochi federal constituency of Abia State which seeks an Act to Establish the National Institute for Organic Agriculture and Food Safety Research, Ulonna North, Isuikwuato has passed its first reading at the Federal House of Representatives.
The Bill being spearheaded by the Labour Party chief also has the backing of three others.
If passed into law, it will Conduct in-depth research on the impact of organic food consumption on public health outcomes related to NCDs.
Institution will Provide crucial data to inform dietary recommendations and National health policies, develop comprehensive educational and practical agricultural programs, the lawmaker told newsmen.
It will also empower consumers with knowledge about the benefits of organic foods as well as provide grants, funds and support to individuals, educational institutions, non-profit organizations, public and private entities for conducting research in organic agriculture and food safety.
As the National Assembly Member pointed out, the proposed Institution will also Support and promote the development of sustainable organic agricultural practices and technologies and ensure the safety of organic food products for consumers by advancing research on the safety, quality, and traceability of organic foods, among others.
It is expected that having passed the first reading, the bill will now move to the subsequent stages of more legislative processes, where further debates, and considerations will take place.
