Students of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike Abia State have staged a protest over increase in their school fees, ABN TV reports.

The protest on Tuesday paralyzed academic activities in the institution as students in their large numbers demanded reversal of the increase.

It also affected the ongoing examination of the final year students in the school.

Spokesperson of the Abia State Police Command, ASP Maureen Chinaka who confirmed this to ABN TV said officers of the command have been deployed to ensure that the protest does not degenerate into violence.

A source told ABN TV that the Vice Chancellor of the school, Professor Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe was smuggled out by security operatives following the protest.

Trouble brewed on Monday when the VC announced that students who have not met their fees obligations will not be allowed to sit for the first semester examinations.

Some students were shut out of the examination, a situation that prepared the ground for the Tuesday’s protest.

As at the moment of this report, the situation was under control as high presence of security personnel has been deployed.
