GUU Team Present Trophies To Management

Gregory University, Uturu, participated for the first in the Nigeria Universities Theartre Arts Festival, (NUTAF) in 2019 as an observer. Their wonderful performance at that year’s event sparked interest in this young University licensed in 2012.

Unknown to many this young University, has mastered the act of conquering fear, hence they applied for hosting right and competed with older and battle tested Universities for the slot. According to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Augustine Uwakwe, “the greatest enemy to success is fear, we learned how to conquer over fears and battled with our seniors, the result was the just concluded NUTAF, which we hosted so well”. He said.

Professor Uwakwe, maintained that despite all challenges, starting from COVID-19 to insecurity, they sumounted it all and exhibited class at the event. “We built an Amphitheatre, donated trophies, put amount on each, with a promise to sustain it for another 10 years. We were the first to attract a foreign cultural trope to NUTAF. Above all, we won three out of the eight competitive event. ” he said.

Presenting the trophies on behalf of the contingents to the vice Chancellor, the Head of Department, Theatre Arts and Media Studies, Dr. Ola Uchendu, said that their effort was not in vain as depicted by their performances and the result. “We came first in impromptu essay writing, we came first in spoken words, we came first in traditional drums (Drum Ensemble), we were second in short film, third in narrative dance and costume parade. We were also judged as the best host”. She stressed.

Collaborating what the HOD said, Chairman local Organizing Committee, Dr Oluwaseyi Ogungbesan, thanked the management especially the Chancellor Professor Gregory Ibe for their support before, during and after NUTAF. He maintained that contrary to speculations, by some Universities, Gregory University Uturu was represented hundred percent (100% ) by their scholars.

He assured that in subsequent NUTAF competition, Gregory University Uturu, will do better. “On behalf of the entire team, i want to assure our able Chancellor Professor Gregory Ibe and the management that we are just starting, in subsequent events, we will surpass our own records. We will prove to the world that the slogan: GUU: THAT MEANS MORE is not just a joke but a reality” he concluded.

Gregory University Uturu was not just the first private University to host NUTAF, but also the first to produce female president of Nigerian Universities Theatre Arts Students Association (NUTASA), in the person of Ruth Eseka.
