GUU Pro-Chancellor, Chief Ugochukwu Tasks Universities On Social Change

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council of Gregory University Uturu Chief Onyema Ugochukwu has urged institutions of higher learning in the country to make efforts to be champions of social change.

This is even as he commends the management of Gregory University Uturu for setting the pace in terms of proactive social interventions especially at the peak of COVID-19 in the country.

ABN TV reports that In a statement signed by DR, Media & Public Relations, Sleek Ogbonnaya Ogwo, Chief Ugochukwu lauded the University for being at the forefront of distributing palliatives and relief materials to Abians as a way of cushioning the effects of the outbreak.

“Indeed it was really a breath of fresh air to see our university champion the donation and distribution of many tonnes of palliatives to indigent members of the society during the COVID-19 lockdown. It was even more heartwarming to see that the social interventions went beyond donation of foodstuff to the production of such life supportive materials as medications, power generating set, furnace and sanitizing chamber” he said.

“Chief Ugochukwu, therefore, tasked other institutions of higher learning in Nigeria to emulate the example of Gregory University Uturu by going beyond the statutory task of knowledge transfer to the important assignment of providing impactful solutions to the myriads of problems confronting society.

“Earlier in an address, the Vice-Chancellor of Gregory University Uturu, Prof Augustine Uwakwe enumerated the recent academic and social attainments of the institution, asserting that the pragmatic leadership of the Chancellor, Prof Gregory Ibe, inspired the modest achievements.

“In his own words, It is gratifying to note that apart from achieving tremendous curriculum and infrastructural expansion within a short period, we have not allowed the pandemic to disrupt our academic programme as lectures and tests were sustained online throughout the lockdown period. Arrangements are currently being concluded for the conduct of rain semester examinations. We have also taken giant steps to overcome the perennial twin problems of water scarcity and public power supply.

“Through the charismatic and pragmatic leadership of both the Chancellor and Pro-Chancellor, we have been able to reticulate water to the campus from a sumo facility located four kilometres away, while recently acquiring and installing a brand new electric transformer that when finally energized will enable us to supply light to the campus and our host community” the statement read in part.

Chief Onyema Ugochukwu had recently assumed office as the second Pro-Chancellor of Gregory University Uturu at the expiration of the tenure of the Engr. Mrs Ebele Okeke led the Governing Council.
