At least one policeman has been feared dead and one seriously injured following an attack by gunmen in Ugwu Abba Asaga Ohafia in Ohafia local government area of Abia State, ABN TV reports.
They struck at a police checkpoint where one policeman whose identity could not be ascertained at the moment lost his life.
As at press time, details of the incident, which caused panic across both communities, were still sketchy even as the identity of the deceased was not yet known.
ABN TV’s efforts to speak to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Maureen Chilaka, proved abortive.
This is one of the series of attacks by gunmen in Abia in recent weeks, escalated attacks the state government attributed to opposition figures who work with external forces to destabilise the state.
On Sunday, the convoy of members representing Isialangwa North/South constituency of the state at the National Assembly, Hon. Ginger Onwusibe came under attack and a policeman was feared dead in the state capital, Umuahia.
Gov. Alex Otti has vowed ruthless action against individuals jeopardizing the security of lives and property of the people of Abia State, amidst the increasing security threats ahead of the festive season.
