The Umuahia branch chairman of Ebem Ohafia Development Union, EODU Mr. Ebere Okoro has been shot by suspected arm robbers and currently in an undisclosed hospital in Umuahia, Abia State capital.
ABN TV reports that Mr. Okoro was attacked on his way to bush market along Osaa Road where he normally buys palm oil for retail when he was attacked by suspected robbers in police camouflage.
He was travelling along with his co-trader who gave his name as Mr. Chinenye Eze. The duo were robbed of the total sum of N1.5m.
Trouble started when an ash colour Toyota Corolla blocked them along Osaa Road, demanding that they submit the money in their custody.
The robbers were said to have immediately shot the Umuahia branch EODU chairman, Mr. Okoro on his leg and made away with the sum of N1m belonging to him.
ABN TV gathered that shortly after that, the robbers returned and made away with the remaining N500,000 belonging to his colleague, hidden under the tricycle seat with which they were traveling with.
The traders had earlier made a withdrawal at an old generation bank located along Bank Road Umuahia for the transaction.
While the EODU chairman withdrew the sum of N1m, his colleague took N500,000 while they set out for their journey.
When asked why they decided to trade with cash instead of bank transfer, Mr Eze told our correspondent that their suppliers prefer cash payment instead of transfer.
As at the moment of this report, the EODU chairman could not narrate his ordeal as he was under medical examination.
Officers of the state police command have pledged to commence an investigation immediately.
