Gunmen, suspected to be bandits, have killed a man identified as Ahmodu Mohammed, said to be a chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kampala ward, Bosso local government area of Niger state.
Three daughters of the deceased were also reportedly kidnapped by the gunmen.
Mohammed was said to have been killed on Thursday when the attackers, said to have numbered about 15, invaded his house around 2 am, after two previous raids in the community and at a neighbourhood market.
The ward chairman has, however, been reportedly buried according to Islamic rites.
Wasiu Abiodun, the police public relations officer (PPRO) in Niger state, did not respond to calls by TheCable to confirm the incident. Text messages sent to his phone also received no response.
There has been a spike in attacks by bandits in Niger and other states in the north in recent times.
Mohammed’s reported killing comes days after gunmen raided Madaka village in Rafi local government area in Niger state, which led to the death of at least three people — the attack occurred on December 20, 2020.
The development also comes weeks after gunmen raided Ukuru village in Mariga local government area of the state, which led to the death of 14 residents.
