Abia State is poised for a new era of technological advancement, as the Rector of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba (formerly Abia Polytechnic), Engr. Dr. Christopher Kalu Okoro, has emphasized the critical role of technology in shaping the future.
Speaking during the Abia Technology and Innovation Network Tour, Dr. Okoro described technology as the driving force behind innovation, economic growth, and problem-solving in modern society.
“Technology is the way— the only way to play,” he stated, explaining that while science seeks to expand knowledge, technology applies that knowledge to solve real-world challenges. He highlighted the dynamic nature of technology, noting that as new discoveries are made, they create fresh challenges, which in turn fuel further technological advancements.
According to the Rector, technology is not just about innovation but also about job creation and economic development. He stressed that individuals with digital and technological skills have greater opportunities to apply their knowledge, contribute to economic growth, and generate income for themselves.
Dr. Okoro reaffirmed the polytechnic’s commitment to expanding its programs in line with global trends, stating that the institution is fully aligned with the vision of Governor Alex Otti’s administration to drive technological progress in the state.
“We are ready to support and improve any initiative that fosters technology and innovation in Abia. If we don’t have what is needed, we will seek the necessary support from the government. Our students and innovators deserve access to the best resources,” he assured.
He further revealed plans to strengthen collaboration between the polytechnic and the Abia Technology and Innovation Network (ATIN), ensuring that individuals trained at different tech hubs across the state receive National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF) certification. This partnership will enable trainees to earn both local and international certifications, boosting their competitiveness in the global tech space.
The visit, which was part of the ecosystem tour organized by ATIN, saw key government officials, including Dr. David Kalu, Commissioner for Science, Technology, and Innovation, engage with tech leaders and innovators. Dr. Kalu lauded the initiative, emphasizing the need for stronger ties between academic institutions and the technology sector.
With a growing network of tech hubs, increasing government support, and educational institutions embracing digital transformation, Abia State is well on its way to becoming a major player in Nigeria’s technology and innovation ecosystem.
