The Old Boys of Government College Umuahia, Class of 91B, on Friday, January 3, 2026, converged in Umuahia for their Reunion 2026, a gathering marked by deep reflections, gratitude, and renewed commitment to unity and service.
Government College Umuahia, founded in 1929 by the late Rev. Robert Fisher, remains one of Nigeria’s most prestigious secondary schools, renowned for producing outstanding leaders and professionals across generations. Among its distinguished alumni are former Abia State Governor Orji Uzor Kalu, former Enugu State Governor Okwesilieze Nwodo, and former Minister of Trade and Investment Okey Enelama, among many other captains of industry, technocrats, clergy, and public servants.
The Class of 91B, admitted in September 1991 (with a supplementary intake in January 1991), graduated in June 1997 after completing their WAEC examinations. Over the years, the class has evolved into a formidable and well-structured association, built on friendship, mutual support, and shared values. Mr. Okechukwu Ogbu served as the pioneer Class Captain, laying the foundation for what has grown into a strong alumni body.
Following the registration of the association as a corporate entity with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) in 2022, an executive council led by Ikenna Okere was elected to steer its affairs, alongside a Board of Trustees chaired by Ugwunna Nduagwu.
In his welcome address at the reunion, Class Captain Ikenna Okere described the gathering as a celebration of “Golden Bonds and Timeless Memories,” noting that despite differences in professions and social status, members have remained united under the Umuahian spirit of “shining as one.” He praised the resilience of the association, the sacrifices of members who travelled long distances to attend, and the dedication of those who have continued to work tirelessly for the growth of the class .
The class boasts an impressive array of achievers across diverse sectors. In academia, Prof. Chinedu Eleazu and Prof. Eke Nkemakolam have distinguished themselves in research and teaching. The legal profession features notable names such as Uche Igwe, Barr. Chisom Onuoha, Ikoro Ikoro, and Orji Ihesiulo, while medicine is represented by renowned doctors Nkwachi Onuoha and Henry Ndubuka. The business and finance sector includes respected figures like Ukariwo Ogbusuo, Chijioke Emekaobum, Ikechukwu Iwu, Osinachi Awaibe, Emeka Akweke, Victor Ogbonna, and Okechukwu Ogbu. The clergy is equally represented with pastors such as Akanu Okoro, Nnamdi Eleke, Chidi Kanu, and “Shanka.”
The reunion also provided a solemn moment of remembrance for departed classmates, including Okey Uduma, Chibuike Meregini (Tunji), Ugochukwu Nwagbara (AlaJoe), Ezekwesiri Orji, and Tobechi Chigbo (WarBox), whose memories were honoured with prayers and tributes.
As part of the celebration, distinguished members were honoured with awards for service and excellence. The awardees included Ikenna Okere (Class Captain/President), Sir Victor Ogbonna, Nneji Chiboka, Akanu Okoro (Secretary), Udechukwu Obasi, Barr. Chisom Onuoha (Legal Adviser), Prof. Nkemakolam Eke, Ikechukwu Iwu, Chief Ikechukwu Anyaogu, and Sir Solomon Okezie.
In a gesture of appreciation and compassion, cash gifts of ₦100,000 each were presented to teachers and special classmates, including Bro Mark, while the families of Late Mrs. Otusi and Late Mr. Onyekwe received the gifts on their behalf.
The Reunion 2026 ended on a note of thanksgiving to God and a renewed pledge by members to deepen solidarity, strengthen participation, and prepare capable hands to continue the legacy of the association. As echoed throughout the event, the enduring message of the Class of 91B remains clear: “May We Shine as One.”
