Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has unveiled plans to establish an Export Growth Lab in Aba, the commercial hub of the South East, as part of his administration’s efforts to build a stronger and more functional economy.
Governor Otti disclosed this on Thursday while receiving the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Elsie Attafuah, at the Government House, Umuahia. He emphasized that the Abia State Government is focused on sustainable development and collaboration rather than merely seeking donor funds.
“We believe there is a lot we can learn from you. As a government, we are not necessarily looking for donor agencies to give us money. If we find them, that’s fine, but our goal is to develop self-sustaining solutions,” Governor Otti stated.
The Governor revealed that the state has already secured a location in Aba for the Export Growth Lab, which aims to enhance the quality of locally produced goods for export. He highlighted the ingenuity and resilience of Aba entrepreneurs, noting that the major challenge remains product counterfeiting.
“Aba artisans and entrepreneurs are innovative and forward-thinking. Even in difficult times, they remained in Aba, working hard. Our fight is against product adulteration, especially in food, drinks, and medicine. We are committed to eradicating this challenge,” Otti affirmed.
He emphasized the importance of upskilling in technology and improving product quality to meet export standards.
Beyond trade and industrial growth, the Governor pointed out his administration’s impact in sectors such as healthcare, education, waste management, and road infrastructure. He also disclosed the state’s plan to take control of electricity distribution in Abia by acquiring the Umuahia ring-fenced area of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).
“Energy is a key focus for us. We are in the final stages of acquiring the Umuahia ring-fenced of Enugu DisCo to enable us to control power distribution in Abia,” he added.
Otti reiterated that economic growth is best achieved through job creation and a conducive business environment rather than handouts. He also approved an office space for the UNDP in Abia to enhance their partnership.
In her remarks, UNDP Resident Representative, Elsie Attafuah, commended the Abia State Government for its progressive leadership and expressed readiness to collaborate on various initiatives.
“We are here to explore ways to support Abia in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our focus areas include innovation, digital and knowledge economy, trade innovation and financing, energy, and accelerated community development. We chose Abia because it is working, and we see great potential, especially in Aba,” she stated.
The meeting was attended by top government officials, including commissioners and special advisers.
