The Kano State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has confirmed no fewer than seven persons dead in a fatal accident along the Kano-Hadejia road.
This was coming after the state governor, Abba Yusuf, had earlier confirmed in a statement by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, that over 30 persons lost their lives in the tragic road crash.
In a statement, the command’s spokesperson, Abdullahi Labaran, said the crash involved one commercial vehicle, a DAF trailer with registration number KTG 467 YG, conveying a total of 105 persons.
According to him, “Preliminary investigation revealed that the crash involved one commercial vehicle, a DAF trailer with registration number KTG 467 YG. A total of 105 persons were involved in the crash. Unfortunately, 7 persons lost their lives, while 70 persons sustained varying degrees of injuries (55 males and 15 females).
“The suspected cause of the crash was over-speeding and loss of control, compounded by the dangerous practice of mixing goods with passengers. The crash was classified as a single-vehicle fatal crash. The road condition was good, and no items were recovered at the scene.
“The injured victims were promptly evacuated to four hospitals as follows:
Sir Sunusi Specialist Hospital, Kano: 24 victims (17 males, 7 females). Gezawa General Hospital: 24 victims (16 males, 8 females), Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital: 20 victims (20 males)
Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital, Nasarawa: 7 victims (5 males, 2 females).
“The FRSC commiserates with the families of the deceased and wishes the injured a speedy recovery. The Corps strongly warns motorists, especially commercial drivers, against over-speeding, reckless driving, and the illegal conveyance of passengers in goods vehicles, as these unsafe practices continue to result in avoidable loss of lives.
“Members of the public are advised to remain safety-conscious and comply strictly with traffic regulations to safeguard lives and property,” the command’s spokesperson, Labaran, however, stated.
