Finland Joins NATO, Becomes 31st Member

Finland has become the 31st member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

The Finish age of military non-alignment has ended, according to a statement delivered by President Sauli Niinisto on Tuesday, April 4, 2023.

He claimed that Finland’s involvement in the military alliance will provide security as well as boost its international stature.

President Niinisto also showed that Finland and Sweden had applied to join NATO.

NATO, often known as the North Atlantic Alliance, is a 31-member intergovernmental military organization comprising 29 European and two North American countries.

The organization was formed in the aftermath of World War II to carry out the North Atlantic Treaty, which was signed on April 4, 1949, in Washington, D.C.

NATO is a collective security arrangement in which autonomous member nations pledge to defend one another against third-party aggression. NATO served as a check on the perceived threat presented by the Soviet Union during the Cold War. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the alliance remained in place and has been involved in military actions in the Balkans, the Middle East, South Asia, and Africa.

The organisation’s motto is animus in consulendo liber (Latin for “a mind unfettered in deliberation”).
