The Federal Government has released a total of ₦2.3 billion to clear outstanding salary and promotion arrears in federal universities across the country.
According to a statement signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Mrs. Folasade Boriowo, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, confirmed that the disbursement—classified as Batch 8 arrears—was processed through the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF). He explained that the move reflects the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to clearing inherited liabilities and improving the welfare of academic and non-academic staff in tertiary institutions.
Dr. Alausa noted that the Ministry of Finance and the OAGF are also in the final stages of releasing third-party non-statutory deductions and pension remittances to the Nigerian University Pension Management Company (NUPEMCO), adding that the process will be completed soon.
The Minister further announced that the Federal Government has approved the full mainstreaming of the Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) into university staff salaries beginning from 2026. He said the measure aims to ensure regular and sustainable payment of allowances to academic workers.
In addition, Dr. Alausa revealed that funds have been released under the Needs Assessment of Nigerian Universities initiative, with budgetary allocations made for its continued implementation to improve infrastructure and learning conditions in public universities.
He commended the ongoing work of the Yayale Ahmed Negotiating Committee, describing it as a vital bridge between the Federal Government and unions in the tertiary education sector, helping to sustain dialogue and industrial harmony in Nigerian universities.
