Federal Government has strengthened bilateral cooperation with Ghana on the provision and coordination of Search and Rescue, SAR, services, a critical component of aviation safety and emergency response management.
The move is in compliance with the provisions of the International Civil Aviation Organisation, ICAO, particularly Annex 12 to the Chicago Convention, which requires contracting states to establish and maintain effective Search and Rescue services and to cooperate with neighbouring states to ensure prompt and coordinated responses to aviation emergencies.
Those present at the ceremony where the agreement was signed were the Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, Capt. Chris Najomo undertook an official visit to Accra, Ghana; Director, Air Traffic Services, DATS, Mr Tayo John, representing the MD/CEO of NAMA, Umar Farouk; and Director of Aerodrome and Airspace Standards, DAAS, Alhaji Ahmad Abba.
The objectives of the agreement include enhancing operational coordination between the search and rescue units of both states and promoting regional aviation safety initiatives in accordance with ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices, SARPs.
Speaking at The event, the Nigerian delegation said the effective implementation of this agreement would significantly enhance search and rescue coordination, operational efficiency and aviation safety for both countries and the wider West African sub-region.
