Super Eagles defender, Calvin Bassey, has been hailed as Nigeria’s standout performer despite defeat to host Morocco in the semifinals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Wednesday.
The Super Eagles fell 4–2 on penalties in a tense clash after a hard-fought 0–0 draw over 120 minutes.
While Nigerians lament the missed opportunity to reach the final, many supporters have rallied behind the Fulham defender, hailing him as the top performer and a key reason the match remained goalless.
Fans took to social media to describe Bassey as a “wall,” “beast,” “rock,” and a worthy “Man of the Match.”
On X, one user, @TikiAnaly, insisted the defender single-handedly kept Morocco’s star-studded attack, including Achraf Hakimi and Brahim Díaz, at bay.
“Calvin Bassey was a WALL even with the semifinal heartbreak vs Morocco. 11 clearances (no one dribbled past him) — that’s some MOTM-level heroics! Held off Hakimi, Diaz & co like a boss.
“Hold your head high, warrior! Nigeria is proud of you,” the user wrote.
