Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, passed away on Sunday afternoon at his home in Plains, Georgia.
The 100-year-old statesman had been receiving hospice care for nearly two years, according to reports from U.S. media citing his son, Chip Carter.
Carter, who served as president from 1977 to 1981, was the oldest living former U.S. president. His presidency was highlighted by the landmark Camp David Accords, which brought peace between Egypt and Israel. However, his tenure also faced challenges, including the Iran hostage crisis and domestic economic struggles.

Born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, James Earl Carter Jr. came from modest beginnings as the son of a farmer and a nurse. After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy, he served in the Navy, where he became part of the prestigious nuclear submarine program. He returned to Georgia in 1953 to manage his family’s farm following his father’s death, a move that marked the start of his political journey.
In his post-presidency years, Carter cemented his legacy as a global humanitarian. Together with his wife Rosalynn, who passed away in November 2023, he founded the Carter Center, an organization dedicated to advancing democracy, human rights, and public health worldwide. Carter was also known for his hands-on volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity, advocating for affordable housing.
The Carters received numerous accolades, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, for their extensive philanthropic efforts. Former President Bill Clinton once praised them for “doing more good for more people in more places than any other couple on Earth.”
Jimmy Carter is survived by his children Amy, Chip, Jack, and Jeff, as well as 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
