‘Every Kobo Must Count For Igbo Development’ – IPOB Warns Against Misappropriation SEDC Funds

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has issued a stern warning to politicians and individuals in the South-East region, urging them to refrain from misappropriating the ₦250 billion allocated for the newly established South-East Development Commission (SEDC).

The group insists that the funds must be dedicated solely to the development of the region.

In a statement released on Sunday, IPOB’s spokesman, Emma Powerful, stressed the critical need for developmental projects and intervention programs in the South-East. He emphasized that the ₦250 billion should be used to foster the region’s growth, particularly in areas such as infrastructure, healthcare, and electricity.

Powerful outlined key projects that should benefit from the funding, including the construction and expansion of roads, the rehabilitation of federal hospitals, the establishment of new healthcare facilities, and the building of power plants to ensure a stable and affordable electricity supply.

He also suggested that the funds be directed toward creating industrial parks and free trade zones, particularly in Abia and Anambra states, to generate employment for the region’s youth. Additionally, he advocated for the development of seaports and international airports in the South-East, though acknowledging that the ₦250 billion would not be sufficient to complete these massive projects.

IPOB made it clear that the funds, if allocated, should not be shared among individuals but used for the common good of the South-East. The group condemned any attempt to divert the funds for frivolous expenses such as seminars, conferences, or foreign trips, warning that such actions would be met with fierce opposition.

“The funds belong to the entire South-East region and must be used for the benefit of all states and communities within Alaigbo. We call for equity and justice in the distribution of the resources to avoid any form of strife,” the statement said.

IPOB further emphasized that it would be closely monitoring the activities of key figures involved in overseeing the SEDC, including Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Dr. Benjamin Kalu, and SEDC Chairman Dr. Emeka Nworgu. The group declared that they would hold these individuals accountable for the success or failure of the commission.

“Any attempt to misappropriate these funds will face severe consequences. IPOB is committed to ensuring that the South-East receives the benefits it is entitled to,” the statement concluded.
