Former England midfielder Paul Scholes has described Manchester United players as fantastic in their UEFA Europa Cup round of 16 first-leg 4-1 win over Real Betis on Thursday at Old Trafford.
United players were heavily criticized for their shambolic performance in last weekend’s 7-0 loss to Liverpool.
Buth the players put the heavy defeat behind them to put in a better display against the Spanish side.
Marcus Rashford scored the first goal of the encounter in the sixth minute and Ayoze Perez equalized for Real Betis in the 32nd minute.
But second-half goals from Antony, Bruno Fernandes, and Wout Weghorst sealed the win for the Red Devils.
Speaking on BT Sport as quoted by ManchesterEveningNews.co.uk, Scholes praised the players, most especially Bruno Fernandes for stepping up.
“They (United) had a sticky spell before halftime but second half I thought they were fantastic,” Scholes said.
“Some of the players who came in for criticism, Bruno especially, I thought he was brilliant in the center of the pitch where we know that’s his best position.”
United will hope to finish the job and progress into the quarter-finals when they face Betis in the reverse fixture.
The Red Devils will be back in action in the Premier League on Sunday against Southampton at Old Trafford.
Erik ten Hag’s men are third in the Premier League table with a total of 49 points after 25 matches.
