Nigeria has lost one of its most prominent elder statesmen, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, a former Federal Commissioner for Information and an influential leader in the South-South region.
He passed away on Monday night, February 17, 2025, at the age of 97.
The Clark family confirmed his passing in a statement signed by Prof. C.C. Clark, which read:
“The Clark-Fuludu Bekederemo family of Kiagbodo Town, Delta State, wishes to announce the passing of Chief (Dr.) Sen. Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, OFR, CON, on Monday 17th February 2025. The family appreciates your prayers at this time. Other details will be announced later by the family.”
His death comes just days after that of Afenifere leader Pa Ayo Adebanjo, who passed away at 96.
Chief Edwin Clark was a renowned lawyer, politician, and activist, dedicated to Nigeria’s unity and the advancement of the Niger Delta region. His political career saw him serve in several key positions, including:
Commissioner for Education, Mid-Western Region (1968-1971)
Commissioner for Finance and Establishment, Bendel State (1972-1975)
Federal Commissioner for Information (1975)
Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1979-1983)
Beyond politics, he was a staunch advocate for the rights of the Niger Delta people, leading organizations such as Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), South-South Peoples Assembly, and the Southern and Middle-Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF).
His efforts in championing resource control, fiscal federalism, and national unity earned him widespread recognition across the country.
Chief Edwin Clark’s passing marks the end of an era in Nigerian politics. Tributes are expected to pour in from across the nation, as leaders, associates, and the people of the Niger Delta remember a man who dedicated his life to justice, equality, and regional development.
