ECOWAS Imposes Fresh Sanctions On Niger

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has imposed new sanctions in response to the Niger Republic coup.

The regional bloc had already given the Niger junta seven days to reinstall President Mohamed Bazoum or face penalties, including military intervention.

However, the coupists called ECOWAS’s bluff and promised to reject any foreign interference on its territory.

It also severed connections with Nigeria, Togo, France, and the United States, as well as closing Nigerien airspace indefinitely.

Following the expiration of the deadline, the group set a meeting for Thursday to assess the situation in the West African country.
