DSS Petitions X To Deactivate Sowore’s Account Over Post On President Tinubu

The Department of State Services (DSS) has formally petitioned X, formerly known as Twitter, requesting the deactivation of the account belonging to Omoyele Sowore, publisher and former presidential candidate, within 24 hours.

In a letter signed by B. Bamigboye on behalf of the Director-General of the DSS, the agency accused Sowore of making a social media post capable of inciting violence and threatening national security. The petition specifically referenced a tweet Sowore made on August 25, 2025, where he accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of dishonesty during a visit to Brazil.

The tweet read: “This criminal @officialABAT actually went to Brazil to state that there is NO MORE corruption under his regime in Nigeria. What audacity to lie shamelessly!”

The DSS described the post as “inflammatory” and “false,” alleging that it had already triggered protests among supporters of the president and could further heighten political tensions. The agency argued that the tweet constituted offences under the Criminal Code Act, Cybercrimes Act, and the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, stressing that both the author and the platform could be held liable under Nigerian law.

The security agency warned X of “far-reaching, sweeping and across-the-board measures” if the demand to remove Sowore’s tweet and deactivate his account was not met immediately.

“The said tweet is misleading information, online harassment and abuse, hate speech, and capable of causing disunity as well as discrediting the President before the comity of nations,” the DSS maintained.

Sowore, who is known for his vocal criticism of successive Nigerian governments, had not responded to the DSS petition as at the time of filing this report.
