DSS agents detained Doyin Okupe, the former director-general of Peter Obi’s presidential campaign, on Thursday morning at Lagos’ Muritala Mohammed International Airport.
The arrest was announced by Okupe’s attorney, Tolu Babaleye.
Okupe, according to him, was detained on his way to London.
According to the information, the DSS detained Dr. Doyin Okupe at the Lagos Airport while en route to London.
“He was asked to provide proof that the Federal High Court in Abuja had released him from the case in which he was found guilty, paid a fine in full, and was given permission to return home”, Tolu Babaleye said.
“When will the bullying stop? Who is Dr. Doyin Okupe’s pursuant? The individual has no case to answer as of right now, so I hereby demand that the DSS release my client right away because doing otherwise violates his right to liberty, right to movement, and human dignity”, Tolu Babaleye continued.
“It’s unfair because man’s health is rapidly declining”!
In December 2022, Okupe, a former Senior Special Assistant to former President Goodluck Jonathan, was found guilty of accepting more than N200 million in payment from Col. Sambo Dasuki, a former National Security Advisor (retd).
As a result, on each of the 26 counts for which he was found guilty, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of a Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced him to two years in jail with the option of an N500,000 fine.
In presiding over the case brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Justice Ojukwu declared that Okupe, the first defendant, had broken the Money Laundering Act.
She informed him he had until 4.30 pm to pay the N13 million fine option.
Okupe, however, avoided jail by paying the fine.
