Dr. Okwuonu Marks One Year As CMD Of Abia Specialist Hospital, Highlights Key Achievements

The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Abia Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Center, Dr. Chimezie Okwuonu, has marked his one-year anniversary in office, celebrating a series of landmark achievements under his leadership.

In a statement, Dr. Okwuonu expressed gratitude to the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti (OFR), for his unwavering support in transforming the hospital into a leading healthcare institution. He also thanked stakeholders and the hospital team for their contributions to the progress made.

Among the key accomplishments recorded in the past year is the restoration of accreditation for housemanship training, which had been lost for four years. Not only was accreditation regained, but the training quota was also increased from 24 to 36 doctors. The number of specialist services available at the hospital was expanded significantly from just one to sixteen.

Dr. Okwuonu further highlighted the establishment of several new specialist clinics, including dental, orthopedic, haematology, neurology, dermatology, and stroke clinics. The hospital also reintroduced dialysis services with brand-new machines and restored radiology services such as X-ray, echocardiography, ECG, and ultrasound. In addition, the paediatrics unit now boasts a newborn division equipped with incubators and phototherapy units.

The hospital has also advanced its surgical services, with successful urology procedures, including prostate and kidney surgeries. A free medical screening program for prostate cancer was launched, and medical staff received specialized training on basic life support and patient care.

To improve working conditions, the hospital administration offices were renovated, and new automated laboratory machines were installed to enhance diagnostic accuracy. The hospital’s patient intake has surged from 150 to 652 per month, leading to increased revenue generation.

Dr. Okwuonu attributed these achievements to Governor Otti’s commitment to revitalizing healthcare in Abia State and called on the public to continue supporting the administration’s efforts to provide quality medical services.
