The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government for prioritizing the development of the South East region, particularly through the initiation of the Abia Airport project.
In a statement made available to ABN TV on December 14, 2024, Kalu applauded the Federal Government for its commitment to bridging infrastructure gaps in the region. He described the Abia Airport, set to commence construction next Tuesday, as a transformative project that will bolster economic activities in Abia State and enhance connectivity and trade across the South East.
Kalu highlighted the collaboration between the Federal and Abia State governments on the project, citing Governor Alex Otti’s recent clarification that the airport is a federal initiative, with the state government providing necessary support. Kalu also played a pivotal role in facilitating the project’s approval at the federal level before engaging the state government to upgrade it to a full-fledged airport from its initial airstrip concept.
Though unable to attend the groundbreaking ceremony due to the presentation of the 2025 national budget, Kalu praised the synergy between elected representatives and the state government. He assured Governor Otti of his continued commitment to attracting people-oriented projects to Abia State as part of his role in the national parliament.
The Deputy Speaker further thanked President Tinubu for his unwavering support of South East development, referencing the recent approval of the South East Development Commission (SEDC). He expressed confidence that projects like the Abia Airport would advance the President’s economic agenda to address infrastructure deficits and improve Nigeria’s economy.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the Abia Airport will mark a significant milestone in the region’s development journey, reinforcing efforts to boost its economic and infrastructural growth.
