The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), has charged the Interim National Working Committee (INWC) of the Labour Party (LP), to promote internal democracy to regain and sustain public trust.
National Secretary of the CUPP, Chief Peter Ameh, have the advice while reacting to the recent recognition of Senator Nenadi Usman’s leadership by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in Abuja, yesterday.
He said that the recent decision by INEC to officially recognise Senator Nenadi Usman as the National Chairman (Caretaker) and Senator Darlington Nwokocha as the National Secretary of the LP, was a well-deserved victory.
The recognition, he noted, complied with a Federal High Court order and has since been reflected on INEC’s official portal.
He declared that INEC’s action reaffirms the supremacy of the rule of law and constitutional democratic principles in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Ameh said, “For months, the Labour Party has been embroiled in a protracted leadership tussle that threatened to undermine its internal cohesion and the broader democratic aspirations of millions of Nigerians who look to opposition parties as beacons of hope and accountability.
“The factional disputes, characterized by the refusal of the former National Chairman to vacate office after the expiration of his leadership, risked eroding public trust in political institutions and distracting from the urgent task of building a stronger, more inclusive democracy.
“INEC’s action is not merely an administrative update; it is a clear endorsement of judicial authority and due process.
“The commission’s listing of Senator Nenadi Usman and her team—including Senator Darlington Nwokocha, Hamisu Santuraki (National Treasurer), Aisha Madije (National Financial Secretary), and Eric Ifere (National Legal Adviser)—demonstrates a commitment to upholding court judgments and ensuring that only legitimate leadership structures are recognized for official party engagements, primaries, congresses, and electoral preparations.
“This development is particularly gratifying for all members and supporters of the Labour Party who have steadfastly upheld constitutional democratic principles amid adversity.
“These patriots have consistently advocated for transparency, adherence to party constitutions, and respect for the judiciary rather than resorting to extra-legal maneuvers or attempts to subvert due process.
