The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) confirmed on Wednesday that a closed-door hearing for the case of Crystal Palace versus UEFA, Nottingham Forest, and Olympique Lyonnais will take place on August 8.
Crystal Palace was relegated to the third-tier Conference League by UEFA’s Club Financial Control Body due to issues related to multi-club ownership. Meanwhile, Olympique Lyonnais will be permitted to participate in the Europa League.
The controversy stems from Eagle Football Group’s ownership, which holds a majority stake in Lyon and is also controlled by John Textor, who owns a controlling interest in Crystal Palace. Following the ruling, Textor resigned from Lyon’s board, with Michele Kang stepping in as chairwoman and president.
Crystal Palace, who earned their Europa League spot by winning the FA Cup last season, appealed UEFA’s decision. CAS will now hear the appeal next month.
If Palace’s appeal is unsuccessful, Nottingham Forest—who finished seventh in the Premier League—will take their place in the Europa League.
Lyon qualified for the competition by finishing sixth in Ligue 1 and were allowed to keep their spot as they finished higher than Palace in their domestic league.
No verdict is expected on August 8, but a ruling is anticipated by August 11.
