The Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, has reflected on his encounter with the late former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a leader deeply concerned about the plight of the poor.
Speaking to journalists during the Third Day Prayers held in honour of the late president, Obi recalled meeting Buhari during his campaign.
He described the former military head of state and civilian president as a man whose sincere dedication to uplifting the less privileged left a lasting impression.
“I had the opportunity of meeting the late Muhammadu Buhari while I was campaigning,” Obi recounted.
“I still remember his words clearly. He said to me, ‘Please care for the poor Nigerians.’ That message has stayed with me, and I believe he did his best within his capacity.”
Obi emphasized the importance of public service, urging leaders to reflect on the temporary nature of life and the need to serve with integrity.
“We must all learn to serve our country selflessly, keeping in mind that one day we will all be called back by our creator,” he said.
Praising Buhari’s legacy, Obi noted that the former president’s heartfelt concern for the poor reflected a life marked by simplicity and sincerity.
According to Vanguard, President Bola Tinubu and other high-ranking officials received Buhari’s body on Tuesday at the Katsina International Airport before proceeding to Daura for the state burial.
Buhari passed away on Sunday in a London hospital after a brief illness. He was laid to rest in his hometown, Daura, in accordance with Islamic rites. Thousands of mourners gathered to pay their final respects to the former Nigerian leader.
