Budapest 2023: Tobi Amusan Fails To Defend 100m Hurdles Title, Finishes 6th In Final

Tobi Amusan of Nigeria failed to defend her world women’s 100-meter hurdles championship, finishing sixth in the final at the 2023 World Athletics Championships.

The Nigerian ended considerably behind the leaders in Thursday’s final at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest, Hungary.

Amusan clocked 12.62 seconds, trailing Jamaica’s Danielle Williams, who won the race with a time of 12.43 seconds.

Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico grabbed silver with a time of 12.44 seconds, while Keni Harrison took bronze with a time of 12.46 seconds.

The 27-year-old Nigerian was the reigning champion after winning the global title in Eugene, Oregon, last year, where she set a new world mark with 12.12 seconds in the event’s semi-final.

However, controversy delayed Amusan’s preparations for Budapest 2023.

The Athletics Integrity Unity (AIU) punished her for reportedly “missing three tests in 12 months” in July.

As a result, the world champion was left out of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN)’s 26-athlete roster for the event.

However, three days before the tournament, Amusan was exonerated of the allegations, and the suspension was lifted.
