An officer of the Nigerian Police Force identified as Inspector Amadi Kingdom was in the early hours of Saturday shot dead in Umuahia, the Abia state capital.
The incident which took place at Ochendu bye-pass junction, left residents in confusion, leading them to scamper for safety.
A source who spoke to ABN TV on the condition of anonymity said the assailants accosted the slain officer around 5 am while on his way from night duty.
He said the assailants who were apparently on a robbery operation shot the policeman on the stomach and made away with his weapon.
The late security officer was attached to the State police headquarters in Bende road.
When contacted, the Abia state Police Public Relations Officer denied knowledge of the incident.
