Carlo Ancelotti has been officially appointed as the new head coach of the Brazil national team and will assume his duties on May 26, following his final game in charge of Real Madrid against Real Sociedad in La Liga.
According to sports journalist David Ornstein, the 65-year-old Italian becomes the first foreign manager in the history of Brazil’s men’s national team. The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), represented by Diego Fernandes, led the negotiations that concluded with signed agreements between all parties.
Ancelotti, one of the most decorated managers in football, will take over Brazil’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign, with the ultimate goal of securing a record-extending sixth World Cup title at the tournament set to be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The Athletic had previously reported that the Italian’s deal with Brazil will run through the end of the 2026 World Cup. He replaces Dorival Junior, who was dismissed in March after a 14-month tenure.
Ancelotti’s first match in charge will be a crucial World Cup qualifier against Ecuador on June 6.
Since returning to Real Madrid in 2021, Ancelotti has added two La Liga titles and a Champions League trophy to his illustrious resume, which includes eight major European finals. However, this season has seen a dip in Madrid’s form, with a Champions League quarter-final exit to Arsenal, a Copa del Rey final defeat to Barcelona, and a significant seven-point gap behind Hansi Flick’s league-leading side with three matches left to play.
