Benue killings: Over 3,000 Displaced, 48 Homes Destroyed, FG Reports

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, has revealed that at least 3,160 people have been displaced following recent violent attacks in the Yelewata community of Benue State.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News’ Morning Show on Tuesday, the minister disclosed that among those displaced were approximately 810 school-age children. The attacks also resulted in the destruction of around 48 homes, along with numerous shops and business centres.

Prof. Yilwatda explained that his team conducted a thorough needs assessment in partnership with state authorities and international organizations.

“We found that 3,160 individuals were displaced, including about 810 children of school age. The damage also included the loss of roughly 48 homes, not to mention shops and business centres that were destroyed,” he said.

The ministry, in collaboration with the United Nations, NGOs, and other development partners, has developed a long-term response plan aimed at addressing the humanitarian crisis and restoring stability in the community.

The estimated budget for this intervention is about N6.7 billion. Of this, the European Union has pledged €1.5 million (approximately N2.7 billion), with the remaining funds expected from NGOs, the Benue State government, and the federal government.

“This budget will support emergency relief efforts, peacebuilding initiatives, and sustainable solutions to help displaced families,” Yilwatda said.

He emphasized that the response will focus not only on immediate aid but also on rebuilding homes, reviving livelihoods, and facilitating the return of children to school.

The minister also noted that similar interventions are underway in other affected states such as Benue, Borno, and Niger, where communities continue to face challenges from insurgency, flooding, and malnutrition.

“Many of these difficulties stem from climate change, natural disasters, and insecurity. We are working with all stakeholders to ensure a coordinated and lasting response,” he added.
