The member representing Bende federal constituency Abia State, Hon. Benjamin Kalu has expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of work done at Bende-Itumbauzor-Etitiulor Road.
He said the quality of the road is substandard, insisting that it is corrected in resolving a petition before the House regarding the quality of the job.
The contractor, Messrs. Thomcom-Global Links Nigeria Limited, was engaged by FERMA.
Our correspondent gathered that the 2-kilometre road said to have been attracted by Hon Benjamin Okezie Kalu, Spokesperson of the House of Representatives is the subject of a petition.
The petitioner contended that the quality of road work done by the company was substandard.
It is on this premise that Hon. Kalu visited the project for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation.
He said he has informed the contractor and FERMA that there is a petition already before the House Committee on Public Petitions about the road.
According to the lawmaker, the only remedy to the petition is a reconfirmation by the contractor and FERMA that the quality will be improved before the asphalting which was meant to take place from Wednesday, December 9, 2020.
He asked them to stop the asphalting programmed for Wednesday until the corrections were made.
The sentiments of the honourable member about the road quality was echoed by the executive of the Bende Town Union (BTU).
BTU Secretary, Egeonu Nwachukwu, who visited the site on behalf of BTU President-General, Sir Anthony Njoku, complained bitterly about the poor job.
Following Hon. Kalu’s interventions, Engr. Awa, the acting FRME of FERMA who visited the site Saturday morning agreed with the assessment of the honourable member and ordered the contractor to redo the job with immediate effect.
FERMA is also set to commence rehabilitation work on the Umuahia-Bende road shortly.
