The Ballon d’Or award ceremony will take place on September 22 this year, and for the first time, the number of awards for women and men will be equal, organizers confirmed on Monday.
New awards have been introduced for women, including the best women’s goalkeeper, best young women’s player, and top women’s scorer in either a club or national team. These additions were announced by France Football magazine and UEFA ahead of the ceremony at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris.
This means there will be six awards for male players and six for female players, along with an additional prize, the Socrates Award, which recognizes actions promoting solidarity and is open to both men and women.
The nominees for this year’s awards will be revealed in early August.
Last year’s ceremony was marked by a boycott from Real Madrid after it was revealed that their Brazilian forward, Vinicius Junior, did not win the best men’s player award, which instead went to Rodri of Manchester City.
