Assault’: Seun Kuti Remanded In Police Custody For 4 More Days

The magistrates’ court in Yaba, Lagos, has granted an application for an extension of Seun Kuti’s remand for an additional four days.

Seun was apprehended and arraigned on Monday after being filmed punching a police officer on the Third Mainland Bridge.

On Tuesday, Adeola Olatubosun, chief magistrate, asked the police to keep the musician for an extra 48 hours before releasing him on bail.

This came after the police sought an order to detain him in detention for another 21 days pending the conclusion of their investigation.

She also ordered that the case be adjourned until May 22 for mention and that the prosecutor duplicate the case file and send a copy to the state director of public prosecutions for advice.

However, on Thursday afternoon, Simon Lough, who was leading a police legal team to the court, asked for an extension, stating that it was needed to allow for further investigation into the case.

The chief magistrate ordered that Kuti be held in police custody until May 22.

Seun’s house was recently searched by the authorities.

According to Lagos police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin, the agency “stumbled on certain suspicious things that warranted the search.”

The singer has been accused of attacking a police officer.

If convicted, Kuti may face up to three years in prison under Nigerian law.
