It is believed that one of a four-man robbery gang’s members was killed in Okpoko, a suburb of Onitsha, Anambra State.
It was learned that the gang, which traveled in a tricycle, was attempting to rob a victim when one of the gang members unintentionally fired a gun, striking another gang member in the chest.
In a news release confirming the incident, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, a spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, claimed that the gang abandoned their member who had been shot and left, citing local witnesses.
Police officers on patrol in the neighborhood on Sunday, according to Ikenga, discovered the robber’s body.
In an attempt to steal the victim of his personal goods, the four-man gang robbers accidentally shot one of their own members, according to information from one of the eyewitnesses. He said:
The robbers fled the area after leaving their comrade with a gunshot wound to his chest while the victim managed to flee.
Police officers who responded to a distress call along Obibuenyi Street in Okpoko found the unnamed young man’s lifeless body and believe him to be an armed robber.
He stated that patrols had been stepped up in the region and made a commitment to inform journalists of any new information.
