Nelson Adepoyigi, the abducted chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, has been killed by his captors after they received a ₦5 million ransom.
Reports indicate that Adepoyigi was shot dead after the kidnappers, who had initially demanded ₦30 million, were only able to secure a ₦5 million payment. The individuals who delivered the ransom were also taken by the kidnappers but were released unharmed.
Adepoyigi was abducted last Monday while parking his vehicle at his residence in Ifon town.
The chairman of Ose Local Government Area, Kolapo Ojo, confirmed the tragic incident and expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation in the region.
“This pattern of brazen abductions, even at the very gates of people’s homes, confirms that insecurity has taken a dangerous and intolerable dimension. We urge our people to remain vigilant, promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest security post, and stand united as we work together to overcome this threat,” Ojo said.
Ojo expressed relief that the two individuals who carried the ransom were returned safely but noted that the killing of Nelson Adepoyigi is a profound loss for the community.
“The entire leadership and people of Ose Local Government mourn this tragic loss. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and political associates of the deceased,” Ojo added.
“His dedication to the progress of our party and the grassroots community will be forever remembered and honored.”
Ojo also pointed out the rising insecurity in the area, revealing that just days before Adepoyigi’s abduction, another resident narrowly avoided being kidnapped while parking his motorcycle.
In response to the incident, State Police Commissioner Wilfred Afolabi stated that the police had not yet confirmed the killing. He assured the public that special officers have been dispatched to Ifon to investigate the reports circulating on social media.
