Ancelotti’s Brazil Stumble To Goalless Draw Against Ecuador In World Cup Qualifiers

Carlo Ancelotti’s debut as Brazil’s head coach ended in frustration on Thursday, as his side was held to a 0-0 draw by Ecuador in the South American World Cup qualifiers — a result that adds early pressure on the Italian tactician.

Brazil struggled to find a breakthrough against Ecuador’s disciplined and compact defence.

In the first half, clear-cut opportunities were scarce, with the best chance falling to Vinicius Jr., who saw his effort — set up by Gerson — saved by goalkeeper Gonzalo Valle.

Ecuador nearly took the lead after the break when John Yeboah tried to play a through ball to Nilson Angulo, but the forward was ruled offside.

Brazil upped the tempo in the second half and carved out more opportunities. However, they were unable to convert. Richarlison missed a golden chance after receiving a precise pass from Vinicius Jr. in the penalty area, while Casemiro’s powerful shot from distance was again stopped by Valle.

Speaking after the match, Casemiro acknowledged the growing pains under a new regime: “Of course, we always have to improve, but little by little, we’re getting better. It’s only been two or three days with a new coach. The dynamic is good, and the atmosphere is good. I’m very happy to be back. The atmosphere is excellent.”

Vinicius Jr. echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the short time the squad has had to adapt: “Ancelotti hasn’t had time to show us his game plan yet. It’s only been two or three days of training.”

With the draw, Brazil stay in fourth place in the standings with 22 points. Ancelotti, who was appointed last month, faces a tough task in reviving Brazil’s form as they chase a record-extending sixth World Cup title.

Next up for Brazil is a challenging clash with third-placed Paraguay, who come off a 2–0 victory over Uruguay.

Ecuador, on the other hand, moves a step closer to World Cup qualification, sitting second in the table with 24 points. They will face ninth-placed Peru on Tuesday as the qualifiers continue.
