…..Legal Expert Condemns Detention as a Violation of Fundamental Rights
Anambra State is currently embroiled in controversy following the arrest of Chief Chidozie Nwangwu, popularly known as Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki. The arrest, reportedly carried out by the state government, has sparked widespread condemnation, with legal experts and concerned citizens decrying it as a violation of his constitutionally guaranteed rights to freedom of worship and expression.
In a strongly worded statement, legal practitioner Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor described Nwangwu’s detention as unlawful, warning that it reflects an abuse of state power. According to Ejiofor, Nwangwu was invited for a meeting by the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, only to be arrested upon arrival.
Alleged Reason for Arrest
At the center of the controversy is a trending undated video in which Akwa Okuko is purportedly heard discussing a substance called “Okeite.” However, Ejiofor noted that the video was not released on Nwangwu’s official platforms, raising concerns about its authenticity and intent. He further questioned whether any crime had been committed, even if the video’s contents were genuine.

Citing Sections 38 and 39 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), Ejiofor emphasized that every Nigerian has the right to freedom of thought, religion, and expression. He argued that Nwangwu’s detention over his religious and personal beliefs violates these fundamental rights.
Who is Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aku?
Chief Chidozie Nwangwu is a well-known traditional doctor, recognized for his metaphysical practices. Contrary to claims that he encourages illicit activities, Ejiofor stated that Nwangwu has consistently advised individuals without legitimate means of livelihood against seeking his services.
“If his arrest is linked to the viral video, then this is an unlawful detention that must be condemned,” Ejiofor said, adding that the move by the Anambra State Government sets a dangerous precedent for suppressing religious and expressive freedoms.
Concerns Over Agunechemba Security Outfit
Ejiofor also raised concerns about the Agunechemba Security Outfit, a state-backed security initiative launched to combat crime. He warned that the outfit could be misused for political purposes, especially with the 2025 Anambra gubernatorial election approaching.
He cautioned against any attempt to deploy Agunechemba as a tool for political persecution, stating that such a move would be “roundly resisted by well-meaning Anambrarians.”
Ejiofor has called on the Anambra State Government to immediately and unconditionally release Chief Chidozie Nwangwu, describing his continued detention as a gross abuse of power.
He further urged the government to ensure that Agunechemba remains focused on its original mandate—fighting crime—rather than being used for political witch-hunts.
“The people of Anambra will resolutely reject any attempt to subvert the security outfit’s purpose,” Ejiofor warned, calling for wise counsel to prevail.
The Anambra State Government has yet to issue an official statement regarding the allegations. However, the controversy surrounding Nwangwu’s arrest continues to fuel debates on the limits of state power and the protection of constitutional rights in Nigeria.
