Amidst Tears, Victims Of Jos Massacre Laid To Rest

The remains of more than 30 persons killed during the attack on the Yelwan Zangam community in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State have been buried.

Gunmen had, Tuesday night, invaded the community close to the permanent site of the University of Jos, and killed about 37 people.

The killing happened barely one week after 27 travellers were murdered in Gada-biyu, along Rukuba Road, still in Jos North LGA.

The victims of the Yelwan Zangam attack were buried in the wee hours of Wednesday without skirmishes, contrary to the widespread belief that the burial would be problematic due to incidents that followed the killings.

Angry youths on Wednesday dumped more than 20 corpses at the main gate of Plateau State Government House to protest the attack on the community, inhabited by the Anaguta ethnic group in the outskirt of Jos.

Officials of the state government arranged for the bodies to be wrapped in white clothes, and returned them to the community for internment.

The state’s Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dan Manjang, told Daily Trust that the burial was carried out in collaboration with the community members peacefully.

He said measures were put in place to calm nerves.

The spokesperson for the community, John Abiti, also confirmed the burial.

He said he lost several relatives in the attack.
