Preparations have been concluded for the 3rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Abia Online Media Publishers Association (OMPAN), scheduled to hold on Friday, December 12, 2026, at the Umuahia North Local Government Area Multipurpose Hall.
This year’s AGM is themed “The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Media and Journalism,” reflecting ongoing global conversations about the transformative role of AI in news dissemination, content creation, media ethics, and newsroom operations.
According to organizers, the event will examine both the opportunities and challenges posed by AI, especially as it continues to influence how news is produced, verified, and consumed in the digital era.
Speaking with newsmen in Umuahia, Chairman of the Planning Committee and former OMPAN Chairman, Comrade Ugochukwu Nwankwo, said the theme was strategically chosen to address current realities among media professionals.
“AI has become part of media workflow, consciously or otherwise. Many practitioners are now deeply engaged in the use of AI tools. This AGM will provide a platform to understand its long-term impact, ethics, and the future of journalism,” he stated.
On his part, the Chairman of OMPAN, Chief Promise Uzoma Okoro, noted that the 2026 edition will be unique as it incorporates a capacity-building segment.
“This year’s program goes beyond speeches. We will have a hands-on training session for members, intending members, and even members of the public who wish to understand AI’s role in media practice,” he added.
The event will feature a keynote lecture by renowned IT expert, Dr. Pastra Arinze Etie, while the Member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency, Hon. Obi Aguocha, will serve as Chairman of the occasion.
Organizers described the gathering as open to media professionals, students, tech enthusiasts, public analysts, and members of the public interested in the future of digital journalism.
The association extended an open invitation, urging stakeholders and the public to attend.
“Come one, come all,” the release concluded.
