Align With Tinubu For Greater Gains – Deputy Speaker, Kalu To South East

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has urged the South East region to align fully with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to unlock greater political and economic opportunities for the zone.

Kalu made the call in Umuahia during the official launch of Renewed Hope Partners (RHP)—a grassroots mobilization initiative designed to promote President Tinubu’s second-term bid and deepen federal presence in the region.

According to the Deputy Speaker, aligning with the federal government is no longer optional if the South East is to benefit meaningfully from ongoing national development programs.

“The time for token support has passed,” Kalu declared. “We must decisively align with the centre and translate President Tinubu’s national achievements into tangible regional benefits.”

He outlined the gains recorded under President Tinubu in the last two years, including over $50.8 billion in proposed investments, ₦9.1 trillion in revenue, 3.4% GDP growth in 2024, and $23.4 billion in foreign remittances. He also mentioned the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) initiative projected to save ₦2 trillion monthly in petrol imports.

Kalu announced plans to set up Renewed Hope Councils in all South East local governments through the South East Development Commission (SEDC), aimed at turning federal policies into grassroots impact.

He also appealed to the Federal Government to prioritize key infrastructure projects in the region, such as the construction of gas pipelines, dredging of the Onitsha River, and expansion of Onne Port, stressing that these interventions would fast-track industrialization and boost regional trade.

“With the recommencement of the Port Harcourt–Maiduguri rail corridor and the recent UNDP partnership for a South East masterplan, it’s clear that President Tinubu means well for our region. Now, we must position ourselves to benefit maximally,” Kalu said.

The event drew political stakeholders, traditional rulers, youth groups, and representatives from across the five South East states, all of whom pledged support for the Renewed Hope agenda.
