Akanu-Ukwu Ohafia Celebrates 2024 Traditional Retirement Ceremony In Grand Style (Photos, Video)

The serene community of Akanu-Ukwu Ohafia in Abia State came alive with colorful festivities as it hosted the much-anticipated traditional retirement ceremony, known as Igba Uche, from December 26th to 28th, 2024.

The three-day celebration showcased the rich cultural heritage of the Igbo age-grade system, a practice deeply rooted in Ohafia tradition.

The event, which emphasized unity, community development, and cultural pride, was presided over by His Royal Highness, Eze Mba Odoh Okereke (JP), the paramount ruler of Akanu. In his address, Eze Okereke highlighted the significance of the age-grade system as a vehicle for fostering sustainable development and unity in the community.

“The age-grade system is not just a tradition; it’s a tool for sustainable development. Over the years, Ohafia has carefully converted this cultural system into a platform for executing community projects,” the royal father stated.

A notable highlight of this year’s Igba Uche was the successful partnership between the Ikenga Ugumba and Anyafumba age grades, who jointly executed and unveiled a landmark project during the event. Speaking on this achievement, Eze Okereke lauded the remarkable communal spirit exhibited by the members.

“Akanu-Ukwu’s project is the biggest singular community development effort in the region. It is not just aesthetically pleasing but also a testament to the unity and commitment of our people,” he said.

The chairman of the organizing committee, Mr. Zadok Uduma, provided further insight into the project’s execution, revealing that despite prevailing economic challenges, the two age grades raised over ₦150 million through individual contributions.

“In a time of economic hardship, our people came together and contributed. Each male member donated ₦200,000, while the women gave ₦150,000. This shared sacrifice underscores our unwavering commitment to building our community,” Mr. Uduma stated.

The Igba Uche ceremony commenced on December 26th, with each participating age grade showcasing their contributions to community development. On December 27th, the completed projects were formally presented to the community elders for blessing and approval, signifying their official acceptance.

The grand procession held on December 28th brought the festivities to an exciting conclusion, drawing visitors from across Nigeria and beyond. Attendees marveled at the elaborate cultural displays and commended the community’s dedication to preserving its heritage through developmental strides.

Reflecting on the broader impact of the age-grade system, Eze Okereke emphasized the self-sufficiency model it promotes, reducing reliance on government intervention.

“What we do here reduces pressure on the government. If other communities adopt similar practices, we can achieve monumental development without waiting for external aid,” he remarked.

In his closing address, Eze Okereke urged the younger generation to uphold the values of unity and shared responsibility.

“What is worth doing is worth doing well. Our children must continue this tradition of unity and sacrifice. It is not just for today but for the generations to come,” he advised.
