Again, ASUU-FG Meeting Ends In Deadlock

A stakeholders meeting called on Tuesday evening by the Ministry of Labour and Employment failed to persuade the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off the ongoing strike, despite the special appeal made to them by top government officials.

ABN TV reports that ASUU had embarked on a one-month warning strike on February 14, 2022, to press home their demands, including the adoption of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution payment platform.

Tuesday’s meeting is the second of its kind since the academics declared a one-month warning strike three weeks ago.

The academics are seeking improved welfare, revitalisation of public universities, and university autonomy among other demands.

ASUU representatives at Tuesday’s meeting said they were no longer interested in signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). They demanded action on past agreements.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, expressed optimism that the impasse will be resolved soon.
