After COVID-19 Disruption In Education System, Strike Needless, NANS Tells FG, ASUU (Video)

National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS Abia State Axis has called on the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU to reach a compromise to ensure that the ongoing one month warning strike by ASUU is quickly brought to an end to enable the students go back to school, noting that the COVID-19 disruption in educational system was enough damage.

At a press conference which took place at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike, Umuahia on Friday, the leadership of the union took a swipe at the federal government for not paying attention to the education sector because their own children are studying overseas.

Addressing newsmen, the Zonal Representative of NANS Abia State axis, Comrade Frank Eme Orji said the students are suffering on the account of the ongoing strike, adding that it is gradually exacerbating social vices, leading students to engage in anti social behaviour as a result of idleness.

While appealing to the students to remain law abiding and stay away from anything that will jeopardise their future, Comrade Orji expressed optimism that very soon, the appeal for lecturers to go back to school will yield positive result.

“Let the federal government do the needful and respect their agreement with ASUU in 2009. They should not be flexing muscle with the future of Nigerian students. If the needful is not done, we will mobilise massively for a serious protest.

“We have always been peaceful. If our demands are not adhered to, they will know the strength Nigerian students have. Both parties should resolve their differences and end the suffering of innocent Nigerian students,” he appealed.

Describing governor of the state, Okezie Ikpeazu as a student friendly leader, Comrade Orji urged him to do more by making education a top priority in the state.

He called for more investment in the future of young people in the country to curtail social vices that are on the increase.

“Any youth who is not employed is a potential threat to all members of the society and the nation at large. Everyday we hear that youths are involved in kidnapping, robbery, stealing or one crime or the other. It is because of unemployment.

“Nigerian students are equally youths and it is very important and fundamental that youths and Nigerian students should be engaged as expected by the government of the day.

“We are using this medium to encourage them to abstain from any indecent act that will affect them. They should all remain law abiding,” he advised.

He urged that federal government and ASUU should go back to negotiation table to end the ongoing strike.
