The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced a three-day period of mourning in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The mourning will commence on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, during which the party will suspend all political activities and public communications.
This was revealed in a statement issued on Monday by Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC’s Interim National Publicity Secretary and spokesperson for the Opposition Coalition.
The party praised Buhari as a leader who served Nigeria with unwavering dedication, discipline, and a strong moral compass.
“In this period of national grief, we urge Nigerians to remember President Buhari for his integrity, humility, and steadfast commitment to public service,” the statement read.
However, the ADC also issued a sharp rebuke against what it described as political opportunism surrounding Buhari’s passing. The party accused the current administration and Buhari’s former political allies of attempting to exploit the former president’s death for political gain.
“The same government and party that, over the past two years, worked to discredit Buhari’s legacy and shift blame for their failures onto him, are now positioning themselves as chief mourners. This is not only hypocritical but a blatant attempt to extract political mileage from a national tragedy,” the statement asserted.
The ADC urged Buhari’s family and loyalists to remain vigilant and guard against insincere tributes driven by political calculation. The party also called on Nigerians to honour the former president’s memory by holding future leaders to high ethical and moral standards.
