The Management of Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, has postponed the 2025/2026 Students’ Union Government (SUG) election indefinitely following a protest over the disqualification of a presidential aspirant.
In a press release signed by the Director of Relations/Public Relations Officer, Dr. Chijioke Nwogu, the University said it observed with dismay a protest allegedly sponsored by some students of the Faculty of Engineering.
The protest was linked to the disqualification of Mr. Nicholas Emmanuel Chimaobi, a Mechanical Engineering student, who had aspired to contest for the position of SUG President. According to Management, the student was disqualified by the Students’ Union Government Electoral Commission (SUGECO) on security grounds.
The University alleged that instead of seeking redress through established internal mechanisms, the aspirant mobilized some students from his faculty and neighbouring institutions, thereby disrupting academic activities.
To restore order and safeguard lives and property, the Vice-Chancellor directed the indefinite postponement of the election. Management also dissolved the Students’ Electoral Committee and announced that a new committee would be constituted. The current SUG Executive Council will remain in office until a new election is conducted.
Furthermore, the University ordered an investigation into the security concerns that led to the disqualification, as well as the circumstances surrounding the protest.
While reaffirming students’ rights to lawful expression of grievances, Management condemned actions capable of undermining the peace and orderly administration of the institution. Students were advised to remain calm, law-abiding, and focused on their academic pursuits.
