Abian, Ukonu Obasi Elected Councillor In UK

An indigene of Abia State, Ukonu Elisha Obasi, has made history as he emerged the new Councillor for St John’s Ward in Tunbridge Wells Borough Council, Kent, United Kingdom.

According to the official results announced by the Returning Officer, William Benson, on Thursday, October 30, 2025, Obasi, who contested under the platform of the Liberal Democrats, secured a decisive victory after polling 629 votes to defeat five other contestants.

His closest challenger, Christopher Pierce David Hoare of the Reform UK Party, scored 177 votes, while Katherine Sergeant of the Green Party came third with 160 votes. Others include Kit Hawes-Webb of the Tunbridge Wells Alliance with 105 votes, David Sumner of the Conservative Party with 90 votes, and Joseph Dore of Independents for Tunbridge Wells who polled 20 votes.

Out of the 4,159 registered voters, a total of 1,183 ballots were cast, representing a 28.4% voter turnout, with only one rejected ballot.

The Returning Officer, Mr. William Benson, officially declared:

“I hereby declare that OBASI, Ukonu Elisha, is duly elected as the Councillor for St John’s Ward.”

Mr. Obasi’s emergence has been greeted with excitement among Nigerians and particularly Abians in the diaspora, as it marks another milestone for Africans making significant strides in global politics.
